The area is most famous for Cognac, the Pinot grape and wine, and on nearly every country road you will have the opportunity to taste and buy if you wish.

Beaches and Swimming

The nearest sandy beaches are at Meschers, about a 15 minute drive.

A little further along you will find St George de Didonne and Royan, again offering superb beaches and a multitude of shops, restaurants and places of interest. Slightly further along the coast is where some very good surfing beaches can be found, or from Royan you can take the ferry across the Gironde to the wilder side of the Atlantic coast, where the surf is big! Lacanau and Carcans are excellent for experienced surfers.

When the temperatures soar, however, some people swim in the river just outside the apartment!

Places of Interest

La Rochelle: is about an hour to the North, allegedly one of the prettiest ports in France, with masses of shops and waterfront restaurants to suit all pockets and tastes, plus a picturesque harbour. This port is one of Frances' leading sailing centres with world class races often starting from here. The racing yachts are often seen coming in and out of the harbour.

Bordeaux: is less than an hour to the South, famous for its architecture, and of course, wine. Excellent shopping!

Saint-Emilion: Discover the amazing history and architecture, with superb medieval streets and buildings. The tourist office, offers a variety of guided tours both during the day and evening.

Talmont sur Gironde: Just a short drive away, is an enchanting small town with narrow winding streets, set on a promontory overlooking the estuary. One of the most visited places on the estuary, it has to be seen to be appreciated.

Meschers: A small town with a bustling port and harbour, offering a large selection of excellent and reasonably priced restaurants. It is also famous for its' Troglodyte caves. 5 superb sandy beaches are available here, but one is very secluded and difficult to access.

Angouleme: is a fabulous day out; a very old town with winding, cobbled streets and loads of history.

General Things To Do

Boat trips and fishing trips are available along the estuary from many of the small ports, and in season with correct tides, they run from just outside the apartment on the harbour.

Horse riding is available in the village

Watersports and sand sports are available in abundance in Royan and the larger resorts.

According to my wife, shoes and handbags can be purchased by the truckload in Royan, Saints, La Rochelle and Bordeaux (also anywhere else she can find a shop), whereas tools, saws, drills etc are also available in the same places along with lots of other lovely things that aren't boring
